Pacing

Suggested flow: Engage 5 min → Explore 10 min (game/hub) → Explain 10 min → Apply 15 min → Reflect 5 min. Total ≈ 45–55 min.

Grouping

  • Whole class: Engage hook (think-pair-share the car question).
  • Individual or pairs: Explore links, Explain reading.

Differentiation — Support

  • Provide a ratio table template for students who struggle with equivalent ratios.
  • Allow calculators for the Percent questions; focus on the concept of "per 100."

  • Ask students to write their own word problem using unit rates from a real-world context.
  • Extension: find the percent discount if a $60 item is on sale for $45.

1 · Engage Hook

Think: A car drives 120 miles in 2 hours. How many miles in 1 hour?

That "miles in 1 hour" is a unit rate. Today you will race with rates, unit rates, and percent. Ready your engine!

2 · Explore Play & Discover

3 · Explain Learn It

Ratio: compares two amounts. Example: 3 cups water to 1 cup juice = 3 : 1.

Rate: a ratio with different units. Example: 120 miles in 2 hours.

Unit rate: the rate for 1. Divide to get it.

Worked example — Unit rate

A car goes 120 miles in 2 hours.

120 ÷ 2 = 60. So the unit rate is 60 miles per hour.

Worked example — Percent

Find 25% of 80. Percent means "out of 100."

25% = 0.25, and 0.25 × 80 = 20.

  1. 150 ÷ 3 = 50 miles per hour
  2. $4 ÷ 8 = 0.5 (or $0.50 per apple)
  3. 2 × 2 = 4, so 5 × 2 = 10
