Get Ready: Volume with Whole Number Edges

To find the volume of a box, you multiply three edge lengths together: length ร— width ร— height. That whole skill runs on solid multiplication facts and being able to multiply three numbers in a row. Warm those up and counting cubes feels easy.

Multiplying three numbers

Volume tells how many unit cubes fill a box. You find it by multiplying the three edges: length ร— width ร— height. The answer is measured in cubic units.

Multiply two at a time: for 2 ร— 3 ร— 4, first do 2 ร— 3 = 6, then 6 ร— 4 = 24.
A box 2 wide, 3 long, and 4 tall holds 24 unit cubes, so its volume is 24 cubic units.

Try It

Your quick check picks one for you, but you can switch any time:

Level 0 Let's multiply three numbers one step at a time.

A. First step: 2 ร— 3 = ___

Hint

2 groups of 3 is 6.

B. Now finish: take your answer (6) ร— 4 = ___

Hint

6 ร— 4 = 24.

C. So 2 ร— 3 ร— 4 = ___

Hint

2 ร— 3 = 6, then 6 ร— 4 = 24.

Level 1 Multiply all three edges.

A. 3 ร— 3 ร— 2 = ___

Hint

3 ร— 3 = 9, then 9 ร— 2 = 18.

B. A box is 5 long, 2 wide, 3 tall. How many unit cubes fill it? (5 ร— 2 ร— 3)

Hint

5 ร— 2 = 10, then 10 ร— 3 = 30.

C. Volume is measured in which units?

Hint

Volume fills space in 3 directions, so we use cubic units.

Level 2 Stretch into full volume problems.

A. Find the volume: 4 ร— 3 ร— 5 cubic units.

Hint

4 ร— 3 = 12, then 12 ร— 5 = 60.

B. A box is 6 long, 2 wide, 4 tall. What is its volume? (cubic units)

Hint

6 ร— 2 = 12, then 12 ร— 4 = 48.

1. What is 3 ร— 4 ร— 2?

Hint

3 ร— 4 = 12, then 12 ร— 2 = 24.

2. A box holds 5 cubes across, 2 back, and 2 tall. How many unit cubes is that?

Hint

5 ร— 2 ร— 2 = 20 cubic units.
