Launch Day Supply Depot Almacén de suministros del Día de Lanzamiento

You are the Supply Chief for Grade 6 Launch Day. Every decision is a division decision — how many equal groups, how many fit, and what the leftover means.

Step 1 of 6

How many fit?

¿Cuántos caben?

Try it first

Cut a whole into equal pieces and count how many fit — the same question you will ask of whole numbers, decimals and fractions all project long.

📖

Step 1 — Key Words Paso 1 — Palabras clave

The five words you will use in every part of this project Las cinco palabras que usarás en cada parte de este proyecto
📦
Dividend Dividendo
The total amount you are splitting up. La cantidad total que estás repartiendo.
738 ÷ 24 → 738
✂️
Divisor Divisor
The size of one group, or the number of groups.
738 ÷ 24 → 24
🟰
Quotient Cociente
How many groups you get, or how many fit. Cuántos grupos obtienes, o cuántos caben.
738 ÷ 24 → 30
🧩
Remainder Residuo
What is left over. In a real problem, it always means something. Lo que sobra. En un problema real, siempre significa algo.
738 ÷ 24 → R 18
🔁
Equivalent division División equivalente
Multiply the dividend and the divisor by the same power of 10 — the quotient does not change.
58.50 ÷ 2.25 = 5850 ÷ 225
↔️
Reciprocal Recíproco
Flip the DIVISOR, then multiply. Dividing by ¾ is the same as multiplying by 4/3.
12 ÷ ¾ = 12 × 4/3
The job: Launch Day needs buses, supply packs, banner ribbon, and trail-mix bags. You will make every one of those decisions with division, then design your own supply order and defend it.
🟠 Level 0 — one step at a time: Read only the first three cards (dividend, divisor, quotient). Point to each one and say it out loud. You will meet the other words when you need them.
🚌

Step 2 — Part 1: Load the Buses Paso 2 — Parte 1: Carga los autobuses

Part 1 · Build the Foundation — divide multi-digit whole numbers, then say what the remainder means Parte 1 · Construye la base: divide números enteros de varios dígitos y luego di qué significa el residuo

Every student rides to the Launch Day field. Buses hold the same number of riders. Find how many buses the depot must order.

🟠 Level 0 — one step at a time:
Step 1: The riders and the seats are already typed in for you.
Step 2: Ask “How many 24s fit inside the total?”
Step 3: If even one student is left over, that student still needs a seat.
Say it: “I need ___ buses because ___ students were left over.”
🟢 Level 1 tip: Use partial quotients. How many buses hold 100 riders? 200? Chunk your way up, then add the chunks. Check the leftover at the end. 🟢 Consejo del Nivel 1: Usa cocientes parciales. ¿Cuántos autobuses llevan 100 pasajeros? ¿200? Ve por partes y luego súmalas. Revisa lo que sobra al final.
LEVEL 2 CHALLENGE RETO DE NIVEL 2
Choose your own school size and bus size — pick numbers that do NOT divide evenly, so the remainder actually forces a decision.
Need a hint? ¿Necesitas una pista?

Divide the total riders by the seats on one bus. The quotient tells you how many buses fill up completely. Then ask: is anyone still standing on the sidewalk?

💵

Step 3 — Part 1: Buy the Supply Packs Paso 3 — Parte 1: Compra los paquetes de suministros

Part 1 · Build the Foundation — divide with decimals by making the divisor a whole number first Parte 1 · Construye la base: divide con decimales convirtiendo primero el divisor en número entero

The depot has money set aside for supply packs. Each pack costs the same. How many packs can you buy?

🟠 Level 0 — one step at a time:
Step 1: The money and the price are typed in for you.
Step 2: The divisor has a decimal point, so move it. Multiply BOTH numbers by 100.
Step 3: Now divide the two whole numbers.
Tiny example: 4.5 ÷ 1.5 is the same as 45 ÷ 15 = 3.
🟢 Level 1 tip: Write the equivalent division before you divide. Both numbers get multiplied by the same power of 10, so the quotient does not change.
Set your own budget and your own pack price — then explain which power of 10 you had to use and why.
📊 Research you need for this step📊 Investigación que necesitas para este paso
🛒 Walmart — School Supplies ↗Walmart — Útiles escolares ↗ Find one real pack and record its price. A price like $2.25 is what makes this a decimal divisor.
Need a hint? ¿Necesitas una pista?

A decimal divisor is hard to think about. Multiply the divisor by a power of 10 until it is a whole number — then multiply the dividend by the SAME power of 10. The two divisions are equivalent.

🎀

Step 4 — Part 2: Ribbon and Trail Mix Paso 4 — Parte 2: Cinta y mezcla de frutos secos

Part 2 · Connect and Apply — the same “how many fit?” question, now with fractions and mixed numbers Parte 2 · Conecta y aplica: la misma pregunta “¿cuántos caben?”, ahora con fracciones y números mixtos

Choose your own strategy in this part. You may draw the model or use the reciprocal — but you must say which one you used and why it works.

A length of ribbon marked off into equal banner-size pieces Enter the ribbon length and the piece size → Escribe el largo de la cinta y el tamaño de cada pieza →
🟠 Level 0 — one step at a time: Look at the picture. Count how many equal pieces fit inside the whole strip. That count IS the quotient.
🟢 Level 1 tip: “How many ¾-metre pieces fit in 12 metres?” is a division question: 12 ÷ ¾. Flip the DIVISOR and multiply.
📊 Research you need for this step📊 Investigación que necesitas para este paso
🎀 Michaels — Ribbon by the roll ↗Michaels — Cinta por rollo ↗ Find a real roll. Record how long the roll is and how wide the ribbon is — widths are almost always fractions.

Now both numbers are fractions. Type mixed numbers with a space, like 7 1/2.

LEVEL 2 EXTENSION — Make the quotient bigger than the dividend EXTENSIÓN DE NIVEL 2 — Haz que el cociente sea mayor que el dividendo

Change ONE number above so that the answer comes out LARGER than the amount you started with. Then explain what that tells you about the divisor.

Need a hint? ¿Necesitas una pista?

Turn each mixed number into an improper fraction first. Then keep the dividend, flip the divisor, and multiply. Simplify at the end.

🔍

Step 5 — Part 2: Repair the Depot Order Paso 5 — Parte 2: Repara el pedido del almacén

Part 2 · Connect and Apply — find the error, name it, and fix it Parte 2 · Conecta y aplica: encuentra el error, nómbralo y arréglalo

Last year's Supply Chief left this note in the depot binder. One line is wrong.

Depot note — banner ribbon

"We have 12 m of ribbon. Each banner takes ¾ m."

12 ÷ ¾  →  12 × ¾ = 9

Order 9 banners.

🟠 Level 0 — one step at a time: The pieces are SMALLER than one metre. If each piece is smaller than a metre, should you end up with more than 12 pieces or fewer than 12? Answer that first.
🟢 Level 1 tip: Estimate before you calculate. Then check which number actually got flipped. 🟢 Consejo del Nivel 1: Estima antes de calcular. Luego revisa cuál número se volteó realmente.
LEVEL 2 EXTENSION — Write the trap EXTENSIÓN DE NIVEL 2 — Escribe la trampa

Write a depot note of your own that contains one believable division error, and say what a careful reader should notice.

Step 6 — Part 3: Design the Depot Order and Defend It Paso 6 — Parte 3: Diseña el pedido del almacén y defiéndelo

Part 3 · Design and Defend — your own Launch Day, your own numbers, your own argument Parte 3 · Diseña y defiende: tu propio Día de Lanzamiento, tus números, tu argumento
Design rules. Your order must satisfy all four:
1. A whole-number division whose remainder is NOT zero, and whose leftover changes your answer.
2. A decimal division where the divisor is not a whole number.
3. A division by a fraction less than 1, so the quotient is larger than the dividend.
4. A claim about which of your four divisions was hardest to be sure about — and why.
Reglas de diseño. Tu pedido debe cumplir las cuatro:

Your three quotients. The depot only accepts an order the Chief worked out personally. Tus tres cocientes.

Defend your order Defiende tu pedido

LEVEL 2 EXTENSION — One depot, two readings EXTENSIÓN DE NIVEL 2 — Un almacén, dos lecturas

Give one of your quotients a second, reasonable interpretation that leads to a DIFFERENT order — then argue for the one you would actually send.
