Key Words

Read these words first. You will see them in the story. Hover or tap the underlined words while you read.

ratio โ€” a way to compare two amounts. Example: 2 mangoes to 3 cups of yogurt is "2 to 3" or 2:3.
rate โ€” a ratio that compares two different units, like dollars and cups.
unit rate โ€” the price or amount for exactly 1. Example: $1.50 for 1 cup.
equivalent โ€” equal in value. 2:3 and 4:6 are equivalent ratios.
scale up โ€” make a recipe bigger by multiplying every part by the same number.
profit โ€” the money you keep after you pay for what you used.
Part 1 โ€” The Recipe

Mia and her cousin Diego wanted to earn money for the school trip. "Let's sell mango smoothies at the spring fair!" said Mia. Diego smiled. "Good idea. But first, we need the perfect recipe."

Mia's grandmother shared her secret mix. For every 2 cups of mango, you add 3 cups of yogurt.

The ratio of mango to yogurt is 2 to 3. We can write it as 2:3.

"That ratio keeps the taste just right," Grandma said. "If you change it, the smoothie is too thick or too thin."

Check Your Reading โ€” Q1

Why does the ratio of mango to yogurt matter?

Solve It โ€” #1

Write the ratio of mango to yogurt from Grandma's recipe. (Use a colon, like 2:3.)

Part 2 โ€” A Bigger Batch

The fair was busy. By noon, the cousins had sold every cup. "We need to scale up the recipe," said Diego. "Let's use more yogurt and keep the same taste."

Mia thought carefully. "If we use 6 cups of yogurt, the ratio must stay equal to 2:3."

2:3 is equivalent to 4:6. Multiply both parts by 2: 2ร—2 = 4 and 3ร—2 = 6.

"So we need 4 cups of mango," Mia said, "to go with 6 cups of yogurt. Same great taste, bigger batch!"

Check Your Reading โ€” Q2

What does "scale up" mean in the story?

Solve It โ€” #2

The ratio is 2:3 (mango:yogurt). If the cousins use 9 cups of yogurt, how many cups of mango do they need?

Part 3 โ€” The Price

People kept asking, "How much for one cup?" Diego wanted a fair price. The cousins spent $15 on fruit and cups, and that made 10 smoothies.

To find the unit rate (the cost for 1 cup), divide: $15 รท 10 = $1.50 per cup.

"If we sell each cup for $3," said Mia, "we keep $1.50 as profit for our trip." Diego grinned. "Now that's good math."

Check Your Reading โ€” Q3

How did the cousins find the cost of one cup?

Solve It โ€” #3

A different day, the cousins spent $24 to make 12 smoothies. What is the unit rate (cost for 1 cup)? Type the dollar amount as a number.

Part 4 โ€” The Best Deal

Across the fair, another stand also sold smoothies. A student looked at both signs:

Mia's stand: 4 cups for $6. The other stand: 5 cups for $10.

"Which is the better deal?" the student asked. Mia knew the trick โ€” compare the unit rate. "Mine is $6 รท 4 = $1.50 a cup. Theirs is $10 รท 5 = $2.00 a cup. Mine costs less for each cup!"

Solve It โ€” #4

Find the unit rate for the other stand: 5 cups for $10. Cost for 1 cup? Type the dollar amount.

Check Your Reading โ€” Q4

Why is Mia's stand the better deal?

Explain the Math in the Story

Pick your level. Use the sentence starters to help you write 2โ€“4 sentences.

Level 1 โ€” Beginner (finish each sentence):
  • The ratio of mango to yogurt is ______.
  • To find the unit rate, the cousins ______.
  • Mia's smoothie is a better deal because ______.
Level 2 โ€” Intermediate (use these to start):
  • In the story, Mia and Diego used ratios to ______, and they used unit rates to ______.
  • One example of equivalent ratios in the story is ______ because ______.
  • If I ran a smoothie stand, I would use a unit rate to ______.
