Long Division

Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down โ€” repeat. Master this loop and you'll be ready for Grade 6's standard algorithm.

Why this matters for Grade 6: Standard 6.NS.2 explicitly requires fluency with the standard long-division algorithm for multi-digit whole numbers. Every time you simplify fractions, convert a fraction to a decimal, or find a unit rate in Grade 6, division is under the hood.

The Long Division Loop

Long division follows a four-step loop: Divide โ†’ Multiply โ†’ Subtract โ†’ Bring down. Repeat until there are no more digits to bring down.

Example 1: 936
Answer: 234   Check: 234 ร— 4 = 936 โœ“
Example 2: 847
Answer: 121   Check: 121 ร— 7 = 847 โœ“

Remainders: When the dividend doesn't divide evenly, there is a remainder โ€” a leftover amount less than the divisor.

Example 3: 100
Answer: 16 remainder 4, written 16 R4
Check: 16 ร— 6 = 96, then 96 + 4 = 100 โœ“
In context: If you share 100 stickers among 6 friends, each gets 16 stickers and 4 are left over.

Hint

9รท4=2 remainder 1 โ†’ bring down 3 โ†’ 13รท4=3 remainder 1 โ†’ bring down 6 โ†’ 16รท4=4. Answer: 234.

2. What is the remainder when you divide 85

Hint

Remainder is 1.

5. A teacher has 98 crayons to share equally among 8 tables. How many crayons does each table get, and how many are left over?
Type the number each table gets (not the remainder).

Hint

96=2. Each table gets 12 crayons; 2 crayons are left over.
