Today’s Big Mission

You are a World Cup data scout. Choose two favorite teams, find 3 players from each team, and use the 6 goal totals to calculate median and mode.

1 Find the numbers

Use the linked goalscorers table to find goal totals.

2 Organize

Put the data in order from least to greatest.

3 Calculate

Use (N + 1) ÷ 2 to find the median position, then find median and mode.

4 Check your steps

Use the check buttons. If something is wrong, you get a hint, not the answer.

Every Work Page

  1. Collect or copy data.
  2. Organize the data.
  3. Find median position.
  4. Find median.
  5. Find mode.
  6. Explain.

Notes + Student Practice

Median is the middle value after numbers are sorted from least to greatest. Mode is the value that appears most often.

Use (N + 1) ÷ 2 to find the median position. You do the work; the checks only tell you if you are on track.

Median Steps

  1. Organize from least to greatest.
  2. Count the values. This is N.
  3. Use (N + 1) ÷ 2.
  4. Whole number position: use that value.
  5. .5 position: average the two middle values.

Mode Steps

  1. Look for repeats.
  2. Count how many times each value appears.
  3. The most repeated value is the mode.
  4. If nothing repeats, write no mode.

Helpful Frames

Median: The median position is ___ because (N + 1) ÷ 2 = ___.

Mode: The mode is ___ because it appears ___ times.

Practice A

Data set: 2, 4, 1, 2, 3

Practice B

Data set: 3, 1, 4, 2, 3, 2

Warm-Up: Odd + Even Step Checks

Practice twice before the research task. Problem 1 has an odd number of values. Problem 2 has an even number of values. For both, organize the data first, then find the median and mode. Checks give hints, not answers.

Warm-Up 1: Odd Number of Values

Data set: 3, 1, 2, 4, 2

Warm-Up 2: Even Number of Values

Data set: 2, 1, 3, 2, 4, 1, 2, 5

Guided Problem: Top Scorers Practice

Use the table, but the goal totals are not in order. Organize the data, then find median and mode.
