Statistical question — a question that has many different answers (varies).
⚖️Mean — the average: add all values, then divide by how many.
🎯Median — the middle value when numbers are in order.
🔁Mode — the value that appears the most.
📏Range — the biggest value minus the smallest value.
📊Dot plot — a graph that stacks a dot for each data value.

Worked Example

Find the mean of 3, 5, 7, 9, 6

Step 1: Add all the values: 3 + 5 + 7 + 9 + 6 = 30.
Step 2: Count how many values there are: 5.
Step 3: Divide the total by the count: 30 ÷ 5 = 6.
Answer: the mean is 6.

Sentence Frames

This a statistical question because the answers .
To find the mean, I add and divide by .
The median is because it is the number in order.

Guided Practice

Directions: Solve each problem. Show your work in the space provided and use the hint cue when you get stuck.
  1. Is this a statistical question? "How old is the principal?" (Yes / No)
Hint: does it have just one answer, or many different answers?
  2. Is this a statistical question? "How many siblings do students in our class have?" (Yes / No)
Hint: will different students give different answers?
  3. Find the mean: 3, 5, 7, 9, 6
Hint: add them all, then divide by 5.
  4. Find the median: 2, 8, 4, 10, 6
Hint: put them in order first, then find the middle.
  5. Find the mode: 4, 7, 2, 7, 5, 3, 7, 5
Hint: which number appears the most times?
  6. Find the range: 15, 22, 8, 31, 12
    Hint: biggest minus smallest.
  7. Find the median: 10, 4, 8, 6, 12, 2
Hint: 6 numbers — average the two middle ones.
  8. A dot plot has 3 dots over 5, 1 over 6, 4 over 7, 2 over 8. How many data points in all? What is the mode?
Hint: add the dots; the mode has the most dots.
  9. Test scores: 80, 90, 70, 85, 95. Find the mean and the range.
    Hint: mean = total ÷ 5; range = highest − lowest.
  10. Find the mean: 12, 18, 15, 15
Hint: add the four numbers, then divide by 4.

Answer Key

  1. No — the principal has one age, so there is no variation.
  2. Yes — students have different numbers of siblings.
  3. 30 ÷ 5 = 6.
  4. In order 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 → median 6.
  5. Mode is 7 (appears 3 times).
  6. 31 − 8 = 23.
  7. In order 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 → (6 + 8) ÷ 2 = 7.
  8. 3 + 1 + 4 + 2 = 10 data points; mode = 7.
  9. Mean (80+90+70+85+95) ÷ 5 = 420 ÷ 5 = 84; range 95 − 70 = 25.
  10. (12 + 18 + 15 + 15) ÷ 4 = 60 ÷ 4 = 15.
