A ratio compares two quantities. Example: 3 cats and 5 dogs →
ratio of cats to dogs is 3 to 5. Order
matters — always name the quantities in the same order!

Ratio Language
"For every 2 wings there is 1 beak." "The
ratio of boys to girls is 4 to 3." "There
are 5 red for every 2 blue." Use precise
language to describe ratios!
🔑 Key Idea: A ratio does NOT have to be written as a
fraction. 3:5 and 3 to 5 and 3/5 all represent the same ratio — but
only 3/5 is a fraction. A ratio is a comparison!
