Learning Goal: Use the standard long-division algorithm to divide multi-digit whole numbers accurately.

Vocabulary

dividendThe number being divided (goes inside the division box).
divisorThe number you are dividing by (goes outside the box).
quotientThe result that sits on top of the division box.
remainderWhat is left over when the divisor does not divide evenly.

What You Need to Know

  • Follow the steps: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down, Repeat.
  • Line up your digits carefully so place values stay in the correct columns.
  • Write a 0 in the quotient if the divisor does not fit into a partial value.
  • Check your answer: quotient × divisor + remainder should equal the dividend.
  • Estimate first so you can tell if your answer is reasonable.
  • A remainder of 0 means the number divides evenly.

Worked Example I Do — watch how it works

Divide 408 ÷ 12.
  1. Step 1. 12 into 40 goes 3 times (3 × 12 = 36); write 3, subtract: 40 − 36 = 4.
  2. Step 2. Bring down the 8 to make 48; 12 into 48 goes 4 times (4 × 12 = 48).
  3. Step 3. Subtract: 48 − 48 = 0, so the quotient is 34 with no remainder.
Answer: 34

Guided Practice We Do — try it together

  1. 1. 952 ÷ 14
    💡 Hint: Start with 14 into 95; it goes 6 times (84).
  2. 2. A school orders 3,744 pencils packed 16 to a box. How many boxes?
    💡 Hint: Divide 3,744 ÷ 16; begin with 16 into 37.
  3. 3. 1,426 ÷ 23
    💡 Hint: 23 into 142 goes 6 times (138).

Independent Practice You Do — show your work

  1. 1. 725 ÷ 25
  2. 2. 837 ÷ 27
  3. 3. 1,000 ÷ 8
  4. 4. A stadium has 1,426 seats in 23 equal rows. How many seats per row?
  5. 5. Divide 952 ÷ 14 and check using multiplication.

MCAP-Style Practice

Directions: Answer each item the way you would on the MCAP. For selected-response items, fill in the circle (○) next to the correct answer. For constructed-response items, enter your answer and show your work. Every item below assesses standard 6.NS.B.2.

Independent 129
Independent 231
Independent 3125
Independent 462 seats
Independent 568 (because 68 × 14 = 952)
Item 1 · 6.NS.B.2B — 16 × 234 = 3,744, so the quotient is exactly 234.
Item 2 · 6.NS.B.2C — 952 ÷ 14 = 68 with no remainder, so 68 crates are filled.
Item 3 · 6.NS.B.2125 — 8 into 10 is 1, then continue the algorithm to get 125; check: 125 × 8 = 1,000.
