Get Ready: Divide Multi-Digit Numbers

Long division of big numbers is really a chain of small steps: how many times does it fit?, multiply, subtract, bring down. Each step runs on multiplication facts, basic division, and place value. Warm these up and multi-digit division stays calm.

How long division works

Long division repeats four small steps: divide (how many times does it fit?), multiply, subtract, then bring down the next digit. Knowing your facts makes each step quick.

84 ÷ 4: 4 fits into 8 two times (8 ÷ 4 = 2). Then 4 fits into 4 once. Answer = 21. Check: 21 × 4 = 84. ✔
Estimate first: 84 ÷ 4 is about 80 ÷ 4 = 20, so an answer near 21 makes sense.

Try It

Your quick check picks one for you, but you can switch any time:

Level 0 Let's warm up the facts behind division.

A. What is 12 ÷ 3?

Hint

3 × 4 = 12, so 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

B. What is 20 ÷ 5?

Hint

5 × 4 = 20, so 20 ÷ 5 = 4.

C. What is 6 × 7?

Hint

6 × 7 = 42.

Level 1 Now divide two-digit numbers with no remainder.

A. What is 48 ÷ 6?

Hint

6 × 8 = 48, so 48 ÷ 6 = 8.

B. What is 63 ÷ 7?

Hint

7 × 9 = 63, so 63 ÷ 7 = 9.

C. Estimate: about how much is 81 ÷ 9?

Hint

9 × 9 = 81, so 81 ÷ 9 = 9 exactly.

Level 2 Warm-up straight into multi-digit division.

A. What is 96 ÷ 4?

Hint

4 fits into 9 two times (rem 1), bring down 6 to make 16; 16 ÷ 4 = 4. Answer 24. Check: 24 × 4 = 96.

B. What is 138 ÷ 6?

Hint

6 fits into 13 two times (12), rem 1, bring down 8 to make 18; 18 ÷ 6 = 3. Answer 23. Check: 23 × 6 = 138.

1. What is 72 ÷ 8?

Hint

8 × 9 = 72, so 72 ÷ 8 = 9.

2. What is 84 ÷ 4?

Hint

8 ÷ 4 = 2, then 4 ÷ 4 = 1. Answer 21. Check: 21 × 4 = 84.
