Word problems with fraction division ask "how many pieces fit?" or "how big is each share?" To answer, you need equal-group thinking and the flip-and-multiply move warm. Get those fluent and the words turn into a plan.

1. A ribbon is shared into pieces of 1/2 ft each. How many pieces come from 2 ft?
2. What is 1/2 ร 1/2?
3. What is the reciprocal (flip) of 1/3?
When a problem asks "how many small pieces fit?" it is a division. Count how many unit fractions fill the whole amount, or use flip-and-multiply. Read carefully to see what is being shared.
Your quick check picks one for you, but you can switch any time:
Level 0 Count the pieces one whole at a time.
A. How many 1/2 cups are in 1 cup?
Two 1/2 cups fill one cup.
B. So how many 1/2 cups are in 2 cups? (2 ร 2)
Each cup holds 2 halves, so 2 ร 2 = 4.
C. How many 1/4 cups are in 1 cup?
Four 1/4 cups fill one cup.
Level 1 Read the story, then count or multiply.
A. A board is 3 ft long, cut into 1/2-ft pieces. How many pieces? (3 ร 2)
Each foot gives 2 half-foot pieces, so 3 ร 2 = 6.
B. You have 2 cups of rice scooped 1/3 cup at a time. How many scoops?
Each cup gives 3 thirds, so 2 ร 3 = 6 scoops.
Level 2 Stretch into flip-and-multiply word problems.
A. 1 รท 1/4: how many 1/4 pieces fit in 1 whole?
Flip 1/4 to 4/1: 1 ร 4 = 4 pieces.
B. A 1/2-cup of nuts is split into 1/4-cup bags. 1/2 รท 1/4 = how many bags?
Keep 1/2, flip 1/4 โ 4/1: 1/2 ร 4 = 4/2 = 2 bags.
1. A 4-ft rope is cut into 1/2-ft pieces. How many pieces? (4 ร 2)
Each foot gives 2 half-foot pieces, so 4 ร 2 = 8.
2. 1 รท 1/3: how many 1/3 cups fit in 1 cup?
Flip 1/3 to 3/1: 1 ร 3 = 3 pieces.
