A ratio compares two amounts, like 2 cats for every 3 dogs. To say and build ratios you have to count groups and use skip counting and multiplication. Warm those up and ratios click.
Answer these 3, then press Show my path. No grade β this just points you to the right level.
1. Skip count by 2: 2, 4, 6, ___?
2. What is 3 Γ 4?
3. There are 4 red apples and 2 green apples. How many apples in all?
A ratio compares two amounts. We can write it with the word to, with a colon, or as a fraction. To build one, you just count each group.
Your quick check picks one for you, but you can switch any time:
Level 0 Count each group first.
A. Count: π΄π΄π΄ β how many red circles?
Count them: 1, 2, 3.
B. Count: π΅π΅ β how many blue circles?
Count them: 1, 2.
C. So the ratio of red to blue is
Red first (3), then blue (2): 3:2.
Level 1 Skip count and compare groups.
A. Skip count by 5: 5, 10, ___?
Add 5 each time: 10 + 5 = 15.
B. A box has 6 pens and 4 erasers. The ratio of pens to erasers is
Pens first (6), then erasers (4): 6:4.
Level 2 Warm up straight into ratio language.
A. There are 5 boys and 7 girls. The ratio of girls to boys is
Girls first (7), then boys (5): 7:5.
B. For every 2 cups of juice you add 1 cup of water. With 8 cups of juice, how many cups of water (skip count by the same rule)?
2 juice β 1 water, so 8 juice β 4 water (8 Γ· 2 = 4).
1. There are 3 apples and 5 oranges. The ratio of apples to oranges is
Apples first (3), then oranges (5): 3:5.
2. Skip count by 3: 3, 6, 9, ___?
Add 3: 9 + 3 = 12.
