What is a ratio?

A ratio compares two amounts. We can write it with the word to, with a colon, or as a fraction. To build one, you just count each group.

2 cats and 3 dogs β†’ the ratio of cats to dogs is 2 to 3, or 2:3.
Order matters: cats to dogs is 2:3, but dogs to cats is 3:2.
