Equal ratios

Two ratios are equivalent if you can get one from the other by multiplying or dividing both numbers by the same value — exactly like equivalent fractions.

Scale up: 2:3 → times 2 → 4:6. They are equal.
Scale down (simplify): 6:9 → divide both by 3 → 2:3.

Try It

Your quick check picks one for you, but you can switch any time:

Level 0 Multiply both numbers by the same value.

A. 1:3 times 2. First number: 1 × 2 = ___?

Hint

1 × 2 = 2.

B. Second number: 3 × 2 = ___?

Hint

3 × 2 = 6.

C. So 1:3 = …?

Hint

Both times 2: 2:6.

Level 1 Simplify by dividing both numbers.

A. Simplify 6:8 by dividing both by 2. First number: 6 ÷ 2 = ___?

Hint

6 ÷ 2 = 3.

B. Second number: 8 ÷ 2 = ___?

Hint

8 ÷ 2 = 4. So 6:8 = 3:4.

Level 2 Decide if two ratios are equal.

A. Which ratio is equivalent to 3:4?

Hint

Multiply both by 3: 3×3=9, 4×3=12 → 9:12.

B. Fill in: 2:5 = 8:?. The first number times 4 gives 8, so 5 × 4 = ___?

Hint

2 × 4 = 8, so 5 × 4 = 20.

1. Which ratio is equal to 2:3?

Hint

Both times 2: 4:6.

2. Simplify 10:15 by dividing both by 5. The first number becomes 10 ÷ 5 = ___?

Hint

10 ÷ 5 = 2 (and 15 ÷ 5 = 3, so 2:3).
