📖 What we're learning tonightQué aprendemos hoy

English

Tonight we draw a polygon from its vertex coordinates, then use the coordinates to find side lengths, perimeter, and area.

Key words
  • vertex
  • polygon
  • perimeter
  • distance between vertices
  • scale

In one sentence: When two vertices share a coordinate, the side between them is the distance between the coordinates that differ.

  1. StartEmpiezaStep 1Paso 1

Real example: two vertices are (−4, 3) and (5, 3).

    Ejemplo real: dos vértices son (−4, 3) y (5, 3).

    More detailMás detalle

They share y = 3, so the side between them is horizontal.

  2. Show itMuéstraloStep 2Paso 2

Its length is the distance between the x-coordinates: from −4 to 5 is 9 units.

  3. SolveResuelveStep 3Paso 3

    Now (5, 3) and (5, −2) share x = 5, so that side is vertical: from 3 down to −2 is 5 units.

    Ahora (5, 3) y (5, −2) comparten x = 5, así que ese lado es vertical: de 3 hasta −2 hay 5 unidades.

  4. CheckRevisaStep 4Paso 4

    With side lengths 9 and 5, the rectangle's perimeter is 9 + 5 + 9 + 5 = 28 units and its area is 9 × 5 = 45 square units.

    Con lados de 9 y 5, el perímetro del rectángulo es 9 + 5 + 9 + 5 = 28 unidades y el área es 9 × 5 = 45 unidades cuadradas.

  • 👀

Listen for "vertex" (vértice) — a corner point, written as an ordered pair (x, y).

  • 📏

Crossing zero is where mistakes happen: from −4 to 5 is 9 units, not 1.

  • x comes first, y second — always. Plotting (3, 5) instead of (5, 3) draws the wrong shape.
