Unit R1 · Whole Numbers & Operations
🔢 Whole Numbers & Operations
Five lessons that rebuild whole-number foundations from place value all the way to order of operations — everything Grade 6 number sense (6.NS.2) and expression work (6.EE.1/2) depend on.
Five Lessons
Unit R1 Lessons
Work through the lessons in order — each one builds on the last.
🔢 Place Value, Compare & Round
Read big numbers by place value, compare them using < and >, and round to any place. The foundation for every lesson that follows.
Lesson 2 · Builds 6.NS.2🔢 Add & Subtract Multi-Digit Numbers
Add and subtract numbers up to the thousands with regrouping. Includes front-end estimation so answers can be quickly checked.
Lesson 3 · Builds 6.NS.2/3🔢 Multiply Multi-Digit Numbers
Multiply one-digit and two-digit numbers by multi-digit numbers. Uses an area-model context to build understanding.
Lesson 4 · Builds 6.NS.2🔢 Long Division
Divide multi-digit numbers using long division. Learn to interpret remainders in real-world "sharing equally" problems.
Lesson 5 · Builds 6.EE.1/2🔢 Order of Operations (PEMDAS)
Apply PEMDAS to evaluate expressions with parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction.
For the Teacher
Unit R1 Teacher Notes
Prerequisite: Students should be able to read whole numbers up to at least 10,000 before starting Lesson 2. Lesson 1 provides that foundation if needed.
Pacing: Each lesson is designed for a 20–30 minute independent session. All five lessons together make a solid one-week unit. The exit ticket in each lesson is a quick formative check — collect student responses before moving on.
Standards alignment: Lessons 1–4 directly address 6.NS.2 (fluently divide multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm) by rebuilding prerequisite whole-number skills. Lesson 5 bridges to 6.EE.1/2 (write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents).
Pairs with: the Manipulatives Toolkit for hands-on modeling and the Bilingual Vocab Deck for ESOL support.
