Unit R3 · Decimals & Money

💵 Decimals & Money

Five lessons that build decimal fluency from place value all the way to fractions, decimals, and percents — the exact foundation Grade 6 number sense (6.NS.3) depends on. Every lesson uses money contexts to keep the math real and meaningful.

For the Teacher

Unit R3 Teacher Notes

Prerequisite: Students should be comfortable with whole-number place value and the four operations (Unit R1) before starting Unit R3. Fraction foundations (Unit R2) are helpful for Lesson 5 but not required.

Pacing: Each lesson is designed for a 20–30 minute independent session. All five lessons make a solid one-week unit. Money contexts are used throughout to give every decimal calculation a concrete, familiar meaning.

Standards alignment: All five lessons address 6.NS.3 (fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation). Lesson 5 also previews 6.RP.3c (find a percent of a quantity) and connects to 6.NS.1 fraction work.

Pairs with: the Manipulatives Toolkit for hands-on decimal modeling and the Bilingual Vocab Deck for ESOL support.
