Why this matters for Grade 6: Grade 6 works with fractions, decimals, and percents all at once (6.NS.3, 6.RP.3c). Understanding that 1/2 = 0.5 = 50% means you can move between forms fluently on any problem — taxes, discounts, test scores, and more.

The Three Forms

A fraction, a decimal, and a percent are three names for the same value. Here are the most important ones to memorize:

FractionDecimalPercent
1/20.550%
1/40.2525%
3/40.7575%
1/100.110%
1/50.220%
Fraction → Decimal: Divide the numerator by the denominator.
1 ÷ 2 = 0.5  |  1 ÷ 4 = 0.25  |  3 ÷ 4 = 0.75
Decimal → Percent: Multiply the decimal by 100 (move the decimal point two places right).
0.5 × 100 = 50%  |  0.25 × 100 = 25%  |  0.1 × 100 = 10%

Work These Together

1. What decimal is equal to 1/2?

Hint

1/2 means 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5. Half of one dollar is $0.50 — same idea.

2. A store has a 25% off sale. Which fraction shows this discount?

Hint

25% = 25/100 = 1/4. So a 25% discount means you save one quarter of the price.

3. Convert 3/4 to a decimal. (Type the decimal, e.g. 0.75)

Hint

3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. Or: 3/4 = 75/100 = 0.75.

4. What percent equals 0.1?

Hint

To convert decimal to percent, multiply by 100: 0.1 × 100 = 10%.

5. Which set of three values are all equal to each other?

Hint

3 ÷ 4 = 0.75, and 0.75 × 100 = 75%. So 3/4 = 0.75 = 75% is the correct match.

6. A pizza is cut into 4 equal slices and you eat 1 slice. You ate what percent of the pizza?

Hint

1 out of 4 slices = 1/4 = 0.25 = 25%.

7. Convert 50% to a decimal. (Type the decimal)

Hint

To convert percent to decimal, divide by 100: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5. Or move the decimal two places left: 50.% → 0.50.
