Unit R4 · Bridge to Grade 6
🧩 Factors, Multiples & Patterns
Build the number-sense toolkit Grade 6 depends on: factors and divisibility, prime factorization, greatest common factor, least common multiple, and number patterns that open the door to expressions. Every lesson is tagged with the Grade 6 standard it unlocks — so you always see the payoff.
The Five Lessons
Unit R4 Lessons
🧩 Factors & Divisibility
List all factors of a number, test whether one number is a factor of another, and apply the divisibility rules for 2, 5, and 10.
Lesson 2 · Builds 6.NS.4🧩 Prime & Composite · Prime Factorization
Tell prime numbers from composite, build factor trees, and write any composite number as a product of its prime factors using exponents.
Lesson 3 · Builds 6.NS.4🧩 Greatest Common Factor (GCF)
Find the GCF of two numbers by listing factors and by using prime factorization, then apply GCF to solve equal-grouping word problems.
Lesson 4 · Builds 6.NS.4🧩 Least Common Multiple (LCM)
List multiples to find the LCM of two numbers, then use LCM to solve real-world "when do they line up again?" scheduling problems.
Lesson 5 · Builds 6.NS.4🧩 Number Patterns & Sequences
Identify and extend arithmetic and geometric sequences, describe the rule in words, and use input/output tables as a gateway to algebraic expressions.
For the Teacher
Using Unit R4
Standard unlocked: 6.NS.4 — find the GCF and LCM of two whole numbers and apply the distributive property. Unit R4 builds every prerequisite for that standard from the ground up.
Suggested sequence: Lessons 1 → 2 are essential prerequisites; complete them before Lessons 3 and 4. Lesson 5 stands alone and can be used as enrichment or a bridge to Unit 6 expressions work.
Pairs with: the Manipulatives Toolkit for hands-on factor tiles and number lines, and the Bilingual Vocab Deck for factor / multiple / prime / composite vocabulary support.
