Math is Exploring and Thinking · Lesson 1-2
English: Use the pictures and short steps. Ask questions; let your student do the thinking. Español: Usen los dibujos y los pasos cortos. Hagan preguntas; dejen que su estudiante piense.
Tonight we make sense of a problem, plan a strategy, and use a fraction of a whole number to compare two amounts.
Follow the picture pathSigan la ruta visual
Real example: a garden has 60 pea pods.
Two thirds (2/3) of them are ready to pick. How many are ready?
Dos tercios (2/3) están listas para cosechar. ¿Cuántas están listas?
Divide by the bottom number (3), because thirds means 3 equal groups: 60 ÷ 3 = 20.
Multiply by the top number (2), because we want 2 of those groups: 20 × 2 = 40.
So 40 pods are ready.
Entonces 40 vainas están listas.
Check that it is reasonable: 40 is less than 60 and more than half — that fits 2/3.
Listen for "strategy" (estrategia) — the plan chosen before doing the math.
Divide first, multiply second. Doing it backwards still works, but dividing first keeps the numbers small.
Primero divide y luego multiplica.
If the answer is bigger than the whole amount, something went wrong. Ask "Is that reasonable?"
Pregunta "¿Es razonable?"
Use the same interactive model from the lesson. Change it, notice the pattern, and explain what the model shows.
Move, type, tap, or drag in the model. Watch what changes.
Record one equation, value, or relationship you can see.
I notice ___ changes when ___ changes. This shows ___.Noto que ___ cambia cuando ___ cambia. Esto muestra ___.
Math Practices: Sense Making & Strategy Planning. 1. Identify known quantities and the unknown question. 2. Choose a strategy (draw a model, write an equation, or build a table). 3. Evaluate progress and pivot to an alternate approach if needed

cantidad
An amount in a problem — a number with a meaning attached, like 540 meters.
📌 540 meters — the number 540 AND what it measures.
relación
How two quantities compare or connect to each other.
📌 1 hour → 48 km, 2 hours → 96 km: as one grows, so does the other.
estrategia
A plan for how to solve a problem before you start computing.
📌 “I will draw a tape diagram first, then divide” — chosen before computing.
razonable
A solution that makes sense in the context of the problem.
📌 5/6 of 540 must be under 540, so 450 is reasonable and 650 is not.
perseverar
To keep working on a problem, checking your progress and adjusting your plan when you get stuck.
📌 Stuck on the tram problem → try a tape diagram instead → keep going.
A basket holds 24 apples. Three fourths (3/4) of them are red.
Una canasta tiene 24 manzanas. Tres cuartos (3/4) son rojas.
